What's happening in your garden today?

This is a guide for shrub roses, climbers and ramblers are pruned differently. Step 4 can be ignored as it's not necessary to remove the leaves. I would take a quarter or third off the top growth every year depending on how strong growing the rose is.
Great info! Thank you for sharing this. We're hoping to put a rose bush in the front flower bed this year so this will definitely come in handy, at least for the wife, soon!

That venus flytrap would be able to grow to be a giant in my chicken coop! 🤣

Seriously, though, have you ever known anyone to grow them outdoors? I only ever see them indoors and it seems like they last a short time then either die or get thrown out. Might be something worth researching sometime when I have time. Would be cool to be able to grow these on the back patio to help keep the flies down while we're just hanging out.
They're native to the swamps and bogs of North/South Carolina. They love that harsh environment and high humidity. I won't likely take mine out of the house to be honest. Yesterday I had to feed it a freeze dried meal worm. How crazy is that?

Interesting. Never heard that before. Thanks.

I think I'd better expand a little on that. By mulching I mean don't use bark, grass, straw etc. Roses are hungry plants and I use compost early in the year. Manure is better if available. I feed twice more with blood, fish and bone granules during the growing season. Or water with diluted tomato food.

Well I had my day planned. Dear sweet wife kill them two rooters before you let the rest out. So spent a bit taking care of dinner.

Then get to wheeling Compost and spreading. Still have some to go seems I don't go fast as I use to.

So the new question is, how do you know when/if you need to feed it? Also, have you ever seen it catch a fly inside the house?
It only needs to feed every 2-6 weeks depending on the plant size. I've had it a week, so no, no fly-catching yet. I also have a distinct lack of flies currently (awkward cleanliness flex). I don't really know how to tell (other than an established timeline) when it's "hungry" lol.

Nothing in ours, but we cleared the last of the branches, in the garden between ours and another neighbour's. The guy between us is in a long-term hospital facility.

I noticed the little phlox plug plants on the shed window sill are starting to show little purple flowers.

A week ago, as here, there were none.

Trafford Borough Council has sent a letter advising of the community charge increase.
The "good news" it will only be 7.5% (The maximum they are allowed to raise it is 7.9%)

The "bad news," is that we will now have to pay £50 a year for the green, (garden waste) bin to be emptied each week. This will bring the charge up to err.. 7.9%
Strange that isn't it?

I got rid of my garden waste bin when I moved to my current home. I wasn't going to pay £70 a year for it, especially when it's not emptied during the winter months. I compost anything soft from the garden and kitchen vegetable scraps, the rest I take to the amenity site (tip/dump) three miles away.

Our green bins have always been emptied if put out, on a weekly basis. For half the year, few bins are put out. We only put garden waste in ours.

They are collected weekly, as you are supposed to put food scraps in them. But we never do. We've a Joseph-Joseph compactible bin, in which I use these strong plastic bags, which don't tear.

Everything goes in the grey bin, other than plastic and glass which goes in the black bin and paper and card in the blue bin. The grey bin is emptied every other week and the other two every four weeks.

Finished emptying the one Compost Bin and took some straw off the Asparagus it was too thick.

Trimmed my Butterfly Bush.

Think I will take it off the Strawberries tomorrow.

Got Spider Plants blooming. Got Cabbage and Cauliflower coming up I haven't told my wife I planted Cauliflower.

Woke up neither of my Hearing Aids worked and I can't read Closed Captioning on the TV so it stayed off. And Hearing Aid place was closed so no I don't hear you.

Sunny and warm +12c.

I got quite a bit done either side of lunch, a bit of shopping and doing some laundry.

I got into the little bed at the bottom of the garden.

I used my garden vac to blow out a lot of dead leaves behind the bamboo. There's some dead canes that need pruning out and the "stand" looks a bit thin, but it always does at this time of the year.

The two new rhodos I bought yesterday went in. I turned the hedgehog feeder round to face the tea-house. I also put in three roof tiles to act as stepping stones so I can get to it when the food needs refilling.

I gave this little acer a haircut with garden shears, as I do every year, to stop it getting too big. I might take a bit more off on Thursday.

The pagoda was looking a bit sorry for itself, losing some paint.

P1020702.webp

So the roofs got a coat of "Teal Green" Hammerite. I dunno if metal paint was designed for concrete, but that's what it always gets.

P1020708.webp

The teahouse got a good wash down and the windows cleaned.

P1020706.webp

Even the floor of the verandah!

P1020707.webp

It doesn't need repainting, but I might give the "weather-side" a coat and possibly the verandah floor.

I replaced the dead heather with three new ones, which were only £2.50 each.

P1020714.webp

This is the little azalea that will take its turn in the pot by the front door, when it's in bloom.

P1020715.webp

But we're looking OK.

P1020709.webp

I cut the grass and gave everything some water.

The two rhodos, the three heathers and the azalea I bought were all pot bound and the bottom of each plant dry. They don't water enough in these stores.

Tomorrow, when I come home from golf, I'm going to use the grass seed I bought, where it's needed, like under the acer palmatum and give the lawn a feed, it still looks dog rough in places.

On Thursday I'll do a bit of patio re-pointing, which I'd been putting off until we got a succession of dry days. Unfortunately, they've arrived!

I think you are right. We have a garden waste bin collected which costs us. When I prune the laurel hedge, this takes about three bin loads. Laurel doesn't compost well and is said to have a growth inhibitor when added to compost. Xmas tree also goes in bin with brambles, rose prunings and other bits. I could cart it down to the veg plot to burn when dry. Kitchen scraps and soft prunings are already a valuable addition to compost. I'll definitely think about this!

It was a golf then shopping day, so I didn't get into the garden until 4.00pm.
But it had been warm all day. I removed the finials on the corners of the pagoda roofs (all 36 of them) they just sit in holes I drilled and are secured with a dab of clear silicone. They will need re-painting. I gave the roofs another coat of paint.
Applied more iron sulphate on the moss patches on the lawn, where necessary. Spread some grass seed around, gave the grass a feed and a good watering.

I was going to do some "patio pointing" tomorrow, but I've other stuff to do.

Well been busy pulled up some T Post where I killed Blackberrys a couple years ago. Fixed some of my Compost Bins.

Turned some Compost put some water on it.

Son Tilled my Cover Crop in.

Planted some Coleus seed I had collected. That stuff sprouts everywhere.

Dang wind blowing about 50 MPH and getting cooler. Decided time to quit.

I hope I have help when I go back on Chemo.

I did quite a bit this morning.
I re-painted the pergola ferrules and added a few for possible replacements.

What makes you think I've done this before?

P1020717.webp

I also re-painted the sorin.

This was a pain to make thirty-odd years ago, mostly from stuff I had in the garage.
There's a central steel rod.

From the bottom.
A shaving foam canister top.
A wooden cupboard handle.
Nine drilled out brass cupboard handles.
Nine shower curtain rings.
Nine 4pt milk carton tops,
A nut.
A Blagden garden lighting support spike, I drilled holes in.
Two wooden beads.

It's as authentic as I could make it.

P1020720.webp

I gave the little acer another trim and was able to remove the dead wood of which there's always some.

P1020721.webp

The quince on the fence are out. We've three. I keep them as a "band," along the top of the fence. I don't like them growing outwards as they will interfere with the rhodos and makes it more difficult for me to walk behind the planting. I don't like them too tall, as they add more shade to the lawn, which encourages moss.

P1020724.webp

The little phlox plug plants are "desperate to get out of the shed." But it's still too early to put them in the rockery.

P1020719.webp

I gave everything a good water and put the lawn sprinklers on for a while.

The jukeboxes got a good run out. I've removed the insulation, but I left them with their dust covers on, I made out of some old thermal backed curtains.
I've put their heaters back on timers, as although, it's still cold at night, it will get very warm in there during the day. In May, I'll open the roof vent and the two in the bottom of the back wall.

P1020725.webp

I'll finish the pagoda tomorrow. It's looking odd without its ferrules. The roofs have had two coats of paint. Would you believe £30 for 1ltr?

P1020718.webp

I've decided not to do any patio re-pointing. I'm taking my wife's advice and I'm going to "get a man in." I'm going to get some quotes. I expect it will be a "dear do."
