The Cactus Thread

This thread features a comprehensive discussion on growing, identifying, and propagating cacti and succulents, highlighting community observations, practical troubleshooting, and individual species behavior.
  • Cold Hardiness Limits: Community members noted that several species, including Oreocereus celsianus and cold-tolerant Echinocereus varieties, can survive extreme freezing temperatures down to 0°F (-18°C) as long as their soil remains completely dry throughout winter.
  • Water Therapy Propagation: A specialized method of suspending rootless or severely dehydrated cacti like Astrophytum over water with rubber bands was praised for encouraging rapid root initiation within just a few days.
  • Lighting and Dormancy Requirements: Members cautioned against placing desert cacti in dark indoor rooms or relying solely on basic grow lights, emphasizing that full sunlight and a cool winter dormancy period are necessary to induce blooming.
  • Pest Management Practices: Effective solutions for mealybugs include direct application of isopropyl alcohol and systemic insecticides, while using volcanic ash grit helps prevent sciarid fly larvae infestations.
Zigs, how long does it take you to put an animated video together?

Depends on the shoot, some can take 20 minutes or so, the one above had about 70 frames and then an hour or so editing, sometimes adding text and usually music too.

I made one a while back using a track by Deliah Derbyshire (the one who wrote and produced the Doctor Who theme music) thinking it was 60 years old and out of copyright. When I tried to upload it to Youtube the A.I. said the music was copyright of the bbc from the 1980's :cautious:

Now what is a "public broadcaster" doing spending licence payers money on copyrighting someone else's music from the 1960's? :cautious:

Very nice looking shed and I see that you have it well organized too !! Did you build the new potting shed from scratch or was it delivered ? I need a bigger shed or another separate one. My electric riding mower is taking up the whole center of my potting shed. I have to move it outside so I can work in there. 😞
