What's happening in your garden today?

Nothing again today, apart from changing the white heather in this big Apta pot by the front door, for this azalea, which I bought in B&Q a month ago for £18. I thought it was quite good for the money.

Just a check around this morning, feed the birds and collect the camera cards. I've my Covid jab in a bit. The chemists in our village does them on Sundays. Then household chores, but I may mow the lawn this afternoon.

My new turf is darkening down and is growing faster than the rest of the lawn!

These two wisterias are more or less fully out. As are more of the azaleas.

The blue of these three are out.

P1020907.webp

But the white isn't yet.

So far, with the one on the side of the house, none of these blooms have fallen as they did last year.
But it will be a week before they are out, they should open progressively along the length. Although it did rain overnight, I did chuck three gallons of water around the root last night. Just in case.

This acer is starting to recover after I'd "hacked it into a smaller ball shape" a week ago.

This is our camellia, with one lone red flower, (the others are on a rhodo in front of it).
This is because I always prune it right back. I like it for its variegated, glossy leaves.

I keep it to this size for a reason.

Twenty years ago, it was one of three here. They were beginning to dominate the garden.

I binned two and cut this one down to about 18", dug it out and replanted it where it is now.

I think the centre of the garden has looked better like this since then.

Didn't do much today, just videoed the wisterias. Usually I do this in May, but they are early this year and they will start to fade at the end of the week, before the rhodos and azaleas are out. It was raining, so it's a bit hurried. I might re-do it in a couple of days.

A few bits and pieces, checked on the wallflower seeds to see if they're coming up. Opened up the grow house and checked on the cosmos and put in the fuchsias and trailing geraniums.Pinched out the growing tips of the snapdragon plants, they were looking a bit yellow so i gave them a bit of a high nitrogen feed, they've picked up now.

Nothing today as it was a golf day. Very pleasant, for much of the time it was "shirt-sleeve order." Did three loads of laundry when I came home. Now watching the tennis on TV. Dinner to get, later.
Quite a bit to do tomorrow. I've still some rails to get to repair the 4ft post and panel fence that separates our drive from that of next door's. The new trellis needs painting. There's more weeding to do and the lawn is, "desperate for a mowing."
I'll probably have to do a bit of shopping too.

Speaking of onions, I'm trying out an experimental onion this spring called the Uzen. It claims to produce the World's largest onion bulbs.

I thinned out a few today and although they are a very good-looking onion (and very tasty) they have a lot of growing to do to even approach the size of my Texas 1015s one of which is shown for comparison in the photo below. The 1015s will be harvested next month and not sure about the Uzens as I will let them grow until they flop.

I got quite a bit done today.
Went to Monton Fencing to get the bits for the fence next to our drive. On the way back, I called in B&Q near the Trafford Centre to see if they had a bit of the trellis I needed. They didn't and I was told it was discontinued!
Then did the grocery shopping.
I also resolved this impending problem in the tea-house.

I don't have more than a couple all day if I'm working in the garden and sometimes none, like today.

Anyway... I got the trellis painted. Including the top beam and the frames.

You can just see part of the pink wisteria, top left-hand corner.

I'm going to repair the end bit, the difference doesn't matter.

It was a pain trying to paint the back around the wisteria blooms.

P1030025.webp

I then repaired the side fence, it needed new caps and a few batons.

All the houses were built in 1965. We bought it in 1972. That same fence was there at the time!
OK It could do with a paint, but I'm not bothered, it's now as sturdy as ever and "it'll see us out."

These days, you would do well to get more than fifteen years out of a Waneylap fence panel. It looks a bit "up and down" but the reason is because, two panels are over drain covers.

The lawn got the mow it needed. The third of these azaleas is coming out just as the one on the right side is beginning to fade.

Of the twelve roses on this patio, there has to be one that wants to be the first to bloom.

P1030033.webp

The first of the dahlias in the five big tubs in the shed, is showing!

P1030032.webp

The blue wisteria on this pergola is in full bloom, the white is nearly there.

If it's dry tomorrow, I'll give the balustrade of this pergola a coat of paint, before the falling blossom becomes an inconvenience.

Did a bit of pruning in the front garden.
The two viburnums "battle" for space with the two rhodos and several azaleas. If I left them to their own devices, they would always "win,"and grow far too tall. So they get a good pruning every year.

P1030037.webp

I also have to prune back the viburnam, rhodo and azaleas, where they grow over our curtilage wall and "try to block the pavement."
The rhodo with the small blooms is already out, the azaleas are starting to come out. The other rhodo will be later.

Our acer tree is at its best, all pink and green foliage and pale green blossom.

P1030036.webp

I painted the balustrade of this pergola.

P1030041.webp

It dried before any bits of wisteria blossom could fall on it and spoil the finish

P1030039.webp

The last of the wisterias is now in bloom. No foliage as yet, just as it should be.

P1030038.webp

This little acer has nearly filled the gaps caused by me significantly reducing its size.

The tree azaleas are nearly out.

The lawn here is recovering quite well.

Found out where my Thanksgiving Cactus went. I sold it and forgot.
