Cicada Oak tip death

Someone told my wife that the reproductive cycle of the large cicada broods ends up with eggs\larvae in the tender tips of many trees which being starved then die. I have seen 2.5mm slices in a row along the axis of these dying tip branches but have not yet seen an egg, though I am not sure what I would be looking for actually.
