Larix decidua is, as the name suggests, a deciduous conifer introduced to Great Britain about 400 years ago as a source of timber.

It can live up to 250 years and reach a height of 30 metres.

They are valuable to wildlife, providing food for Squirrels and moths such as the Larch Tortrix Moth.

They protect against enchantment and evil spirits and also have very straight trunks, one of which I have used for my new workbench.

The history of this tree is that it was planted by the school children at the local school about 65 years ago. It sheds branches when the wind gets up, and makes a mess everywhere, but the birds seem to like it. It also provides us with a good stock of firelighters - from the cones it sheds :)
